Overall objective
This program aims to contribute to the achievement of the overall target of the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) 2005-2014 of bringing ESD to every nation's curricula and educational systems and to the Millennium Development Goal 7 of ensuring environmental sustainability though eradication of areas of specific policy neglect and curbing governance failures. More specifically, the overall objective of this program is an increased awareness of ESD in the education community of the Western Balkans and increased awareness of SD planning processes in communities in the Drina River Basin.
Program Purpose
Purpose of this program is to improve practices in schools and communities for sustainable development in Drina River Basin area (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia) and broader Western Balkans.
Beneficiaries and stakeholders
SCHOOLS AND MUNICIPALITIES in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia will be supported to show commitment and invest efforts in improving practices promoting sustainable development. This would result in an increased awareness and knowledge about sustainable development among target populations (students, teachers, school principals, parents, general public) measured through satisfaction studies and/or knowledge tests. In addition, this project will work with community leaders to increase sustainability of partner communities measured through local sustainability indicators.
Results
Program purpose is expected to be achieved through the results presented below:
- Sustainable school concept developed and adopted in 80 percent of the target schools
- Communities work jointly with partner schools towards sustainable development
- Education system and local environmental governance in B&H, Montenegro and Serbia improved and benefiting from sustainable school concept.
