Project "Impact of municipal waste water on River Vrbas"
- with kind support provided by Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway -

Purpose and objectives of the project

The purpose of the project was to identify impact of municipal waste waters on the Vrbas River. Previous analysis has indicated that the water quality in the upstream of the city Banja Luka is classified as the second group of water quality, according to these studies. Using the same parameters, downstream from the urban centre of the city, the water quality is between third and fourth group of water quality, what indicates pollution with great intensity. Bugojno, Jajce and Banja Luka, the biggest urban areas along the river, currently have no wastewater treatment plants. The wastewater is being discharged untreated into the River Vrbas. According to the examinations done so far, the water quality of Vrbas is decreasing, what negatively effects downstream areas development up to the river Sava.

The objectives of this project were:

  • Identification of main polluters in three pilot areas;
  • Assessment of river Vrbas water quality and wastewater quality in three pilot areas;
  • Drafting of possible model for development of sewerage systems;
  • Proposing of possible locations and technological procedure for wastewater treatment installation;
  • Proposing guidelines for development of future action plans, submitted to local authorities;
  • Dissemination of information and project results in order to raise public awareness on impact of municipal wastewater on the river Vrbas.
